History of Cyprus

In 1878 Turkey has transferred Cyprus to Great Britain in exchange for the help promised to it in case of war with Russia; the island became an English colony and there was that till 1959 After emancipating struggle of Greeks-Cypriotes, on August, 16th, 1960, independence of Cyprus has been proclaimed. Archbishop Makarios became its first president. In July, 1974 Greek «black colonels» have lifted armed rebellion against government Makariosa. Turkey has taken advantage of it and under the pretext of protection of Turks-Cypriotes has entered on island the armies, having occupied 37 % of territory. There was illegal «a Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus» between which and other part of island «the green line» along which draw the duty of an army of the United Nations was stretched on 180 km.
