History of Cuba
Christopher Columbus has landed on Cuba on October, 28th, 1492 during the first travel on the West. However island colonisation has begun in 1511 when the first European settlement Barakoa has been based. In 1514 there was a city of Santiago de Cuba, and in 1515 - Havana. Spaniards have transformed island into a storage terminal for the expeditions mastering Mexico and the South America. As a result of the most severe operation to the middle of XVI century almost all local Indians have been destroyed, and to Cuba have started to deliver slaves-Negroes. In XVI and XVII centuries the island prospered, mainly thanks to trade with colonies and pirates. The Cuban emancipating revolution against the Spanish sovereignty on February, 23rd, 1895 has flashed. In April, 1898 the United States have interfered with the conflict and on December, 10th the same year Spain has refused the rights to island. The American military government operated on Cuba till May, 20th, 1902 when the Republic Cuba has been formally proclaimed. On January, 1st, 1959 as a result of guerrilla war on Cuba Fidel Castro who has entered a rigid communistic mode has come to power. Completeness of the power in the country belongs to Castro, however recently in the country little changes towards democratisation have started to occur. Cuba is a member of the United Nations, UNESCO, the CART, the SQUANDERER.
