Economy of Laos

In 1355 Laotian prince Fa-Ngun (Fa-Ngum) has based the state Lansang («the Country of one million elephants»). With support of the khmer (Cambodian) governor in Angkore to which daughter of Fa-Ngum it was married, it managed to realise the claims on one of Laotian princedoms. Then it has won all territory of Laos and many next earths. By means of the missionaries directed by the same king from Angkora, Fa-Ngun has entered in the new kingdom the Buddhism. Together with missionaries the father-in-law has sent to the prince an ancient gold statue of the Buddha who were called as Phabang which became a symbol of its kingdom and has occupied a place of honour in capital. The name of Luangphabang, i.e. “city of Phabanga” from here has gone. The state Lansang history is sated by collisions with neighbours and fights between applicants for a throne. In 16 century Burmans have grasped the city of Vientiane which became new capital. However next century independence of Lansanga has been restored, though internal conflicts did not stop. As a result in the beginning 18 century the state has broken up to three separate kingdoms — Luangahabang (Luang-Prabang) in the north, Vientiane in the centre and Tjampassak (Champassak, or Bassak) in the south. The next two centuries the separated Laotian kingdoms continually were exposed to attacks of neighbours, especially such competing states, as Siam and to Annas. The kingdom Vientiane as a result of invasions of Siameses in 1831 has been annexed by Siam. The kingdom Luangphabang has got in the beginning to vassal dependence on Annama, and in 1835 too has been grasped by Siam; has not avoided this fate and the third kingdom — Tjampassak. All Laotian monarchs have been reduced to level of governors of provinces.Capture of Luangphabanga has been undertaken by Siam not to admit transition of this territory under the power of France which with 1858 strenuously extended the influence on all p-ovu Indochina and has managed to transform to Annas into the protectorate. Nevertheless Frenchmen managed to direct in Luangphabang mission of vice-consul Ogjusta Pavi, whose friendly interest to affairs of local Laotians has induced them to ask support from France. In 1893 France has besieged the Thai capital Bangkok and has established the control over all Laotian earths located to the east of Mekong. Other part of the country has been subordinated to Frenchmen in 1904. In Luangphabange the colonial administration has allowed the king to save a number of the powers, and in Vientiane carried out direct board. Thus Laotian officials continued to occupy the posts, however the general management of all affairs was in hands of the French governor general of Indochina
