Antarctica

Antarcticŕ, southern polar region of the Earth. Unlike Arctic regions representing ocean, surrounded with a land, Antarctic – continent together with southern areas of oceans surrounding it – Silent, Atlantic, Indian (sometimes all these parts of oceans name as Southern ocean).

Continent Antarctica square apprx. 14 million in sq. km – the greatest in the world cold desert where it is concentrated apprx. 70 % of world’s reserves of fresh water, but all it in the frozen state is concluded in a huge glacial cover. Though the radical subglacial surface is at small height above sea level, and places and below it, because of a powerful glacial cover average absolute height of a surface of Antarctica (apprx. 2000) – maximum among continents.

History of Antarctica

The assumption on existence of “the southern earth” has not been confirmed prior to the beginning of 1820 when the British both American commercial operators and the British and Russian national expeditions have started to investigate area of Antarctic peninsula and other areas to the south from the Antarctic Circle.
