Sumgait (Azeri Sumqayıt) - City (1949) in Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea coast, 30 kilometers north of the capital of Azerbaijan - Baku.
History
Sumgait was built in the late 40-ies of the twentieth century. The population grew rapidly, reaching a size of a quarter of a million people, and the city became a severe shortage of housing. The workers lived in overcrowded dormitories. City chemical plants were among the first in the Soviet Union in terms of environmental pollution.
November 7, 1963 in riots took place - more than 800 people came forward to protect the demonstrators, who marched with photo greeting Stalin. Police and vigilantes tried to take portraits. A weapon. One demonstrator was injured, six sat down on the dock.
At the end of February 1988 took place in the Armenian massacre, which became one of the first acts of ethnic violence in recent Soviet history.
